"Anyone can be bought in Las Vegas for the right price." That seemed to be the Mafia's motto when they stepped foot into Las Vegas in the early 20th century. Las Vegas, an isolated city in the middle of the desert, was a Mobster's Paradise. A city that ran on gambling, prostitution, and glamour was the Mafia's calling card. Hence, the Mob built it from the ground up into what it is today. It all started with the mob run illicit Casino's to Bugsy Siegel's, Flamingo, all they way up to the corporate mega Casinos that are now the Mirage, MGM Grand, and Bellagio. The Mob are the roots of that city, and with anything dealing with the mob, crime is of course a top focus. And Las Vegas was no exception. The biggest crime of them all was skimming. Casinos are a multi million dollar cash cow, and when you mix that with corrupt officials and the mob, that means free money. Thus, the mafia devised intricate plans and systems to skim profits off the top of casinos. The Mob used funding from the corrupt Teamsters Union Pension Fund headed by the Union president, Jimmy Hoffa, to build these Casinos. They then appointed the proper inside men to steer authorities away, stay silent, and skim the money. It was a well oiled machine that produced millions in tax free profits for years. However, with all crimes, time prevails, and the mob eventually lost its grip in Vegas. A new, strict standard in Las Vegas, federal intervention, and corporate takeovers led to the demise of the Mob's rule in Vegas. Simply put, the IRS does not mess around.
