In this practical lab session, you’ll learn how to install and configure a DNS Server role on Windows Server 2016. This lab aligns with CompTIA Network+ (N10-008) Objective 10.2, focusing on name resolution services used in enterprise environments.

You'll configure both forward lookup zones and host records, and test resolution using client systems and command-line tools.

🧪 Lab Objectives:

✅ Install DNS Role on Windows Server

Use Server Manager → Add Roles and Features

Select DNS Server, complete the installation

✅ Create a Forward Lookup Zone

Zone type: Primary

Zone name: e.g., corp.local

✅ Add Host (A) Records

Example:

www.corp.local → 192.168.1.20

fileserver.corp.local → 192.168.1.21

✅ Configure DNS on Client PC

Set DNS server IP in network adapter settings

Or use DHCP with DNS option

✅ Test Name Resolution

Use ping www.corp.local

Use nslookup to query the DNS server

Test via web browser if a web server is assigned

✅ (Optional) Configure a Reverse Lookup Zone

Add PTR records for IP-to-hostname resolution

Add-DnsServerPrimaryZone -Name "corp.local" -ZoneFile "corp.local.dns"
Add-DnsServerResourceRecordA -Name "www" -ZoneName "corp.local" -IPv4Address 192.168.1.20
