NASA recently launched the Europa Clipper mission to look for life on one of the moons of Jupiter, but what does it take to build and launch a major NASA spacecraft? Join us at our next Astronomy on Tap for insights from Matt Stumbo, one of the engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory who worked on Europa Clipper these last several years.

Astronomy on Tap is a global phenomenon where professional scientists give informal science talks in local bars with accompanying pub trivia and interactions with the public. The Los Angeles chapter of Astronomy on Tap is very active, with monthly events at the Dog Haus Biergarten in Pasadena. This recording is a bit noisy due to the logistics of operating a camera in a crowded bar, but it sufficiently captures the enthusiastic energy of the few hundred attendees each month. Matt Stumbo is a systems engineer at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He studied aerospace engineering from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo before earning a masters at USC and later joining the team at NASA JPL. At NASA he has been involved with the Mars rovers, working on the operations team for the Curiosity Rover and on the test bed team for the Perseverance Rover. Most recently, he was on the integration and test team for NASA Europa Clipper throughout its construction and leading up to its launch in October 2024.   / matthew-stumbo-46604a46
