Shri Satakadi Hota was born on 29th October 1929 in a village named Jagannath Khunta, 21 kilometers from Baripada town in Mayurbhanj district. His initial schooling was in his village and there after at Baripada. Later on he did his graduation from Puri and completed his degree in Law from Cuttack. He comes from a poor family. His father used to run a garment shop. His meagre income was insufficient to meet the basic needs of the family. His extend family and in laws sponsored his education most of the time. He used to give tuitions to school children to meet his financial needs during his college days. He was a student leader and took active part in the 'Gadjat Andolan' during and after Indian independence.
He joined Indian Railways Service in 1953. He worked in quite senior positions in railways and retired from there. Post retirement he was the editor of the news paper 'Samay' for seven years. He was also the President of the Odisha Sahitya Akademi.
He has written 27 short story collections, 21 novels and a book of poems. he also has written his autobiography titled, 'Dirgha Romanchakari Jatra' (ଦୀର୍ଘ ରୋମାଞ୍ଚକାରୀ ଯାତ୍ରା) . Some of his well known novels are Ashanta Aranya ( Odisha Sahitya Akademi Award 1987), Anek Diganta, Swapna Siuli, Prathma Addhyay & Bhanga Kacha. Some of his short story collections are Fulara Gotie Surabhi, Asatarka Muhurta, Madhu Lagna, Akara Ghara, Katha Anek and Shesha Sambala.
He was w=awrded with Odisha Sahitya Akademi Purashkar in 1987, Sharala Purashkar in 2004, Sahitya Bharati Samann in 2017 and Utkal Sahitya Upanyasa Samman in 2000.
This story Karma Fala deals with the situation of a middle class family where an educated son has gone astray and its effect on the family. It's interesting to see how the father and mother interpret and deal with the situation so very differently.
