Rebound congestion, or rhinitis medicamentosa, is a condition in which the nose becomes chronically congested due to the overuse of topical nasal decongestant sprays such as oxymetazoline or xylometazoline. These sprays normally work by shrinking the blood vessels in the nasal lining, which reduces swelling and improves breathing. However, when they are used for several days in a row, the nasal blood vessels gradually become accustomed to the medication, and the receptors responsible for vasoconstriction become less responsive. As a result, once the effect of the spray wears off, the blood vessels dilate more than before, leading to increased swelling and nasal blockage. This creates a cycle of persistent congestion, short-lasting relief after spray use, dependence on the spray, and often worse symptoms at night. For this reason, topical nasal decongestants should be used only for the recommended duration of 3–5 days and not longer.
