McNamara was born in Kansas City, Missouri, the only child of Ursula and Evan McNamara, who served in the United States military. She grew up in Lee's Summit, Missouri. A very advanced student in certain subjects, she was partially homeschooled and received her high school diploma at the age of 14. At the age of 17, McNamara received her bachelor's degree, summa cum laude, in business administration from Drexel University. She moved in 2011 to Los Angeles, California. In 2014, McNamara had her first series leading role in the MTV dramedy Happyland. In the short-lived television series, she played the role of Harper Munroe and starred alongside Shane Harper and Ryan Rottman. In autumn 2015 she appeared as Sonya in the science fiction film Maze Runner - The Chosen Ones. She previously played a supporting role in the third season of The Fosters.
