I was asked by my employer and friend if I was able to turn a gavel for an archite W e're providing the millwork in the replication of the Court Room of the SCOTUS for the Houston Baptist University and he wanted a memento of the job. I was more than happy to oblige. Never turned a gavel before.

Need to work on my fingernail grind spindle gouge. So used to working with the old ones for years, confidence in the smaller edge takes me a while to get used to. I do like the scraping capabilities of it though. Just need time for practice, which is hard to come by. Too busy turning bowls this last year.

I used Honduran Mahogany for the gavel head and handle and also turned the sound block out of a piece of figured Walnut. Everything is finished in oil/wax. 2 1/8"d x 3 3/4" head. 7/8" x 7 1/2" handle.

Please get instruction on how to safely handle lathe chisels before attempting to turn anything. Keep yourself safe.
