During the Legion expansion, Shadow Priests wielded an incredible artifact weapon called Xal'atath, Blade of the Black Empire. But this wasn't just any ordinary dagger - the blade contained a sentient Void entity who would constantly whisper cryptic messages and dark secrets to whoever wielded it.

The entity trapped inside the blade was so popular that Blizzard decided to expand her role in the story. In Battle for Azeroth, Xal'atath finally freed herself from the dagger and possessed the corpse of a high elf blood mage named Inanis, taking physical form for the first time.

Her transformation from beloved artifact weapon to major expansion villain shows just how much impact player reactions can have on World of Warcraft's storytelling! Now in The War Within, she's building an army in the nerubian kingdom of Azj-Kahet beneath Khaz Algar, and her true nature remains one of the biggest mysteries in Warcraft lore.
