Inside the Basilica of Saint-Denis Basilica lies a thousand years of monarchy, myth, architecture, and unsettling history. Built in the 1130s under Abbot Suger, the church introduced the Gothic style that shaped cathedrals across Europe. Beneath its soaring vaults are crypts layered with sacred ground, legends of Saint Denis, and the remains of kings from the age of the Franks to the Bourbons.

But the story turns in October 1793 — when revolutionaries opened the tombs, dissolved royal remains in quicklime, and erased centuries of dynastic identity. Even beloved rulers like Henri IV were not spared. Later efforts to restore the necropolis gathered bones into a collective burial, leaving individual identities forever lost.
