We learn about verkleinwoorden in Dutch language. We discuss different rules of when to add je, tje, pje at the end of verkleinwoorden.
Let's move forward and discuss about verkleinwoorden. Verkleinwoorden means words which are used to refer to the small things. You can say smaller words or words referring to smaller things. Words referring to smaller things. Usually, in Dutch, if we have a shopping bag then we call it a bag. And if we want to say a smaller shopping bag then we say tasje. A girl is meid and meisje is a smaller girl.
Usually we add je in the end. But there are different rules. We can add je, tje and we can add pje at the end of the words.
There are different regels, there are different rules to add je, tje or pje. And they are pronounced as meisje, tasje, ijse.
Sometimes there is a difference. For example, ijs. I J S, ijs is an ijs. But Ijse is an icecream. Sometimes, verkleinwoorden refer to a different thing but mostly they refer to the same thing in a smaller form.
So, most of the times, we use je at the end of the word. For examle, Husi : huisje. Dorp : Dorpje. Dorp is a village and doprje is a small village.
But if a word ends with, if a word, let me write it down, if a word ends with l, n, w, r or with the vowels. And vowels are called klinker in Dutch. Then we add tje at the end of the word to make it smaller. For example, we have got a word: Deel (D) and we want to make it smaller then we add tje at the end of the word. This word ends with L therefore we have added tje at the end.
Let's take another example. For example, if we have a vrouw then a smaller vrouw would be vrouwtje.
So if the word ends with l, n, w, r or a klinker then we tje at the end of the word to make it smaller.
Similarly, if the word end with m then we add pje at the end of the word. For example, Raam. Raam is a window, becomes raampje.
So, let's revise. To refer to a smaller thing, we usually add je at the end of the word.
And if the word ends with l or w or n or met the klinker i.e., l, n, w, r or with the vowel then we add tje.
And if the word ends with m then we add pje to refer to a smaller thing or a smaller version.
