Another group formed in response to the Jackson Five were the strangley named Ponderosa Twins Plus One. Originally from Cleveland, the young members comprised two sets of twins, Alvin and Alfred Pelham, and Keith and Kirk Gardner, plus one Ricky Spicer. They were brought to Joe and Sylvia Robinson's New Jersey headquarters by Bobby Massey, formerly of the O' Jays, in 1970. Over the next few years they had several releases on Horoscope ( which changed its name to Astroscope to avoid confusion with an already established label of that name ), the biggest seller of which was this fine reworking of Sam Cooke's classic ballad, which almost reached the R&B Top 10 in 1971
