About the speaker:

Joan Chiao, PhD (Harvard University) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology and an Affiliated Faculty in the Interdepartmental Neuroscience and Asian-American Studies Program at Northwestern University. Her research expertise is in social affective and cultural neuroscience. Over the past ten years, she has examined how race, culture, and social status affect the human mind, the brain, and behavior. Of particular relevance to the proposed research is her work characterizing racial and cultural differences in neural mechanisms underlying social and emotional behavior.

Dr. Chiao currently serves on the editorial board of eight peer-reviewed journals including NeuroImage; Journal of Experimental Psychology: General; Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience; Social Neuroscience; and Culture and Brain. Dr. Chiao has received grant support from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. She recently served as editor of the Progress in Brain Research volume Cultural Neuroscience: Cultural Influences on Brain Function and of the Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience journal's special issue on cultural neuroscience. She was recently recognized a Rising Star by the Association for Psychological Science and awarded a SAGE Young Scholars Award. She currently serves as Codirector and Cofounder of the International Cultural Neuroscience Consortium.
