Couples, a fan favorite and winner of the 1992 Masters, recently resolved a decades-old oversight involving Augusta National Golf Club. For years, he had unknowingly failed to follow a tradition that began with the inaugural Masters in 1934—each champion is expected to donate the driver they used to win the tournament to the club’s archives. His iconic win, highlighted by a dramatic tee shot on the par-3 12th hole that just avoided Rae’s Creek, was etched in Masters history. Yet Couples was unaware of the club-donation tradition until 2021. “I had no clue,” he admitted. “I saw an email with some Masters history and realized I was the only champion who hadn’t donated a driver. It blew my mind.” Nearly 30 years after his victory—over 7,600 days later—Couples quickly retrieved the prized MacGregor Eye-O-Matic Eye 85 driver with a persimmon head, the very club that played a key role in his major win. “I always knew where it was,” Couples said. “That driver is incredibly special to me, and I’ve kept it in a safe place.” He ultimately delivered the club to Augusta National in person, finally completing the tradition and contributing to the club’s legendary collection, which includes Tiger Woods’ 1997 driver and Larry Mize’s 1987 sand wedge.
