The world's second-largest lithium producer is cautioning investors about potential further price decline due to an excess lithium in the battery supply chain.

Chilean miner SQM attributes a larger-than-anticipated decline in third-quarter earnings to this year's price drop, citing inventory surplus, especially in Asia, and the introduction of new supply.

Those pressures “could continue to have a negative impact on lithium prices in the short term,” said Chief Executive Officer Ricardo Ramos.

Over the past year, lithium prices have plummeted due to increased supply from Australia, coupled with inventory depletion as certain electric vehicle manufacturers reconsider their expansion strategies.

Albemarle Corp., the largest lithium producer, expressed bewilderment earlier this month over the substantial decline in prices, considering the ongoing robust demand for electric vehicles.
