2014 World Championship held in Italy. The tournament was played in three different stages (first, second and third rounds). In the First round, the 24 participants were divided in four groups of six teams each. A single round-robin format was played within each group to determine the teams group position, the four best teams of each group (total of 16 teams) progressed to the next round.
In the Second round, the 16 teams were divided in two groups of eight teams (four teams from groups A and D in one group, and four teams from groups B and C in the other group). A single round-robin format was played within each group to determine the teams group position, matches already played between teams in the First round were counted in this round. The three best teams of each group (total of 6 teams) progressed to the next round.
In the Third round, the 6 teams were divided in two groups of three teams. A single round-robin format was played within each group to determine the teams group position, the two best teams of each group (total of 4 teams) progressed to the semifinals.

In 2013, Japan tried a new tactics 'MB1' which only one middle blocker on court but with 4 wing spikers. As there were no good middle blocker after 2012. #6 Yūko Sano (35yo, 1.59m) announced retirement as she said physically incapable of handling daily training. #2 Hitomi Nakamichi (29yo, 1.59m), #7 Mai Yamaguchi (31yo, 1.76m) remained. #3 Kimura Saori (28yo, 1.85m), #1 Nagaoka Miyu (23yo, 1.79m), #14 Ebata Yukiko (25yo, 1.76m), #13 Shinnabe Risa (24yo, 1.73m), #16 Sakoda Saori (27yo, 1.75m) were the core players in this tactics. #12, #9, #4 were the substituted player if any players above under performed. Nippon MB1 tactics made them got silver medal in World Grand Prix in final round. But in Day 1, they lost to Azerbaijan 2:3. This was Day 4 Game. Japn won Belgium & Cuba in Day 2 & 3. Nippon used MB1 tactics again and only 1 middle blocker in 14 player list. Puerto Rico was weak team and #9 Cruz Aurea & #11 Ocasio Karina got 12 points each. Nippon #3 still the key scored player in preliminary round. She got 19 points with 49% (17/35) attack success rate.
