Subotica, Feb 11, 2011 -- The Basic and Higher Courts in Subotica had the best results within the USAID Separation of Powers Program (SPP) work that gives support and assistance to the courts in Serbia, SPP Task Manager Sonja Prostran told the media at a news conference on Friday in Subotica's Court Building. The aim of this part of the Program is a more efficient and more transparent judiciary, she added.

The caseload statistics demonstrate how well the courts have been doing, the SPP Task Manager said. At the beginning of 2010, the Basic Court had 7539 cases older than two years, and resolved 6769, which is 90% of those old cases. Since June 2010, 225 old cases on labor law have been received by the Subotica Basic Court and 72 of those were resolved. Prostran said that all 1100 cases received last year by the Civil Department of the Subotica Higher Court have been resolved, and that the Higher Court solved 2265 of the total of 3060 newly received cases in 2010.

Prostran emphasized that this is a five-year program and its component on supporting courts in Serbia has been closely working with court officials on the reform of judicial administration, resolving backlog cases, speeding up of court proceedings, and reducing case delays.

The Program is currently being implemented in 10 courts in Serbia.
