JŽ/ŽS/ŽRS series 661 is a universal diesel-electric locomotive intended for hauling all types of passenger and freight trains on all categories of railways. The G16 diesel locomotive was manufactured at the EMD factories in Illinois (USA) and London (Ontario, Canada). They were still produced under license in Australia and Spain.

A total of 220 locomotives were acquired, which massively replaced steam locomotives on the railways in SFR Yugoslavia in the 60s and early 70s of the 20th century. In addition to the mentioned countries, it was exploited in Egypt, Brazil, Iran, Hong Kong and Israel.

The locomotives of the 661 series carry the epithet of the most famous diesel locomotive in this area, and are in operation in Railways of Serbia, Railways of Republika Srpska and Railways of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Locomotives 661 have the popular name "Kennedy".
