China has a lot of border disputes - but with whom?

Well, first off, the state has multiple disputes with its southern neighbour India, centring on the regions of Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai Chin, alongside some other minor parcels of territory along their mainly mountainous boundary.

Next up is Bhutan, where the two states have never officially recognized or defined their border.

Meanwhile, Nepal and China also dispute tiny areas along their border, with Nepal claiming China encroached on its territory in a report leaked in 2022.

The primary dispute between China and Japan centers around the Senkaku Islands. Japan has controlled them since 1895, but China intensified its claim in the 1970s, possibly due to potential oil reserves.

To its East, China disputes the status of Taiwan, claiming the island is a breakaway province rather than a sovereign country.

And of course, there’s also the South China Sea, where China has overlapping sea claims with Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Brunei and Taiwan.
