As a Korean expat living in Bangkok, this is how I celebrated Chinese New Year aka Lunar New Year in Korea, China, Thailand (making Chinese homemade dumplings, Singaporean Malaysian yusheng Lo Hei toss, visiting Thai temple, eating tteokbuk (Korean rice cake soup) and watching Taiwanese and Burmese dance performance.


When I was a kid, I used to think 설날 (Seollal), the Korean new year is only celebrated in Korea. We would get dressed in hanbok, pay respect to elder family members and eat tteokguk (rice cake soup). This is how I used to celebrate with my family and friends. my mom used to tell me, if you eat a bowl of rice cake soup, you become one year older so I always asked for 2 bowls I remember….

Then I went to a college in America where I first learned about Chinese New Year! But it wasn’t until I studied abroad in Beijing that I realized how BIG this holiday is - people take nearly 2 weeks off to visit their families.



Just like how French people don’t use the word ‘French Fries’, in China, people don’t call it Chinese New Year, simply they call it Chun Jie (Spring Festival) or nong-li nian (lunar new year)


My friends and I used to put on our own fireworks, have big family meals then finish off the night with baijiu (Chinese liquor).

I found out a few years later (I realized with the exception of Japan who adapted the western calendar) most countries across Asia have their own New Years, with their own celebrations, with their own names for the festival, that coincide with the festival in China

Since then, instead of calling it Seollal or Chinese New Year, I started using more inclusive term, Lunar New Year.
