GLENDALE, Pa. -- 6 News has been covering recent car break-ins in Bedford County as well as in other parts of the viewing area. Now there are reports of car windows being smashed in during the day. It's happening at a state park in Cambria County.

Police constantly repeat the warnings: Lock your doors, hide your valuables and park your vehicle near others. But this case is different.

On any given summer day, the Glendale Lake at Prince Gallitzin State Park sees hundreds of boaters, anglers and kids playing in the water. It's a safe place for families to swim, picnic and hike without much crime.

But there's a new trend park rangers are seeing that concerns them. Over the past month at least three vehicles have been broken into. And they weren't unlocked. Their windows were smashed.

"I unlocked the door, opened the door and then that's when I saw the window smashed out and all the glass all over the car," said Barb Whiteford.

It happened to Whiteford and her family Wednesday night. She said they parked in a lot to go hiking on the Troxell Point Trail. When they came back around 4:30 p.m., they found their passenger side window smashed.

"I kind of froze and was like (shriek) and then the kids came running (and gasped,)" Whiteford said.

Shattered glass from her window was still lying on the ground near the trail Thursday. But Whiteford's purse and all its contents were nowhere to be found.

There was the important stuff in her purse like her debit card, check book and driver's license, but there was much more, like the pictures of her father-in-law who recently passed away, that she fears she'll never get back.

"I can't even think of all I had in there," Whiteford said. "You carry your life in your purse and to a lot of people that stuff's trash and it's going to end up in the garbage can and it's stuff I'd like to have back that I can't replace."

Whiteford has already frozen all of her accounts and stopped service on her cellphone. She told 6 News she grew up at Glendale Lake, it's a place she loves and what happened won't stop her from going back.
