Описание к видео CALIFORNIA RAMBLERS: 'Beedle Um Bo', rec. 13 June 1927.

A very late pre-electric recording, restored - the flip side of 'There's A Trick In Pickin' A Chick Chick Chicken', which I recently posted. There is a slight roughness to the higher trebles on this disc, apparently a fault on the recording itself, so that I had to include a degree of treble rolloff to reduce its obtrusiveness.

The CALIFORNIA RAMBLERS, known on the Edison label as THE GOLDEN GATE ORCHESTRA, was the nascent springboard for many aspiring jazz players of the 1930s and 1940s, in their second-to-last pre-electric recording session at Edison's Fifth Avenue, New York studio in June 1927, six weeks before the studio was just about the last in the world to completely switch to electrical recording. Only a few sessions on the cheap 'Harmony' label were still using the pre-electric process into the early months of 1929.

A ragtime tune called 'Beedle Um Bo", subtitled 'a slow drag' had been written by Raymond Birch and published by Charles L Johnson & Co, Kansas City in 1908. This jazz tune by Davis, Akst and Ash may be a reference to the carefree nature of the earlier tune - or it may be a completely separate musical idea. The tune is one of the more trifling numbers cut by the Ramblers in 1927, one of their peak years for recording, during which they recorded around fifty numbers for Edison, Pathe and Banner.

The CALIFORNIA RAMBLERS personnel for this 13 June 1927 session (recording for Edison under the pseud. of 'The Golden Gate Orchestra') was as follows (from Brian Rust):
Frank Cush & Chelsea Quealey - trumpets.
Edward Lapp - trombone.
Bobby Davis - clarinet, alto sax, soprano sax.
Carl Gauper - clarinet, alto sax.
Sam Ruby - tenor sax.
Adrian Rollini - bass sax.
Jack Russin - piano.
Tommy Felline - banjo.
Herb Weil - drums.
Johnny Ryan - vocal.

The record has been equalised and restored by the usage of the acoustic spectral analysis graph, matching its frequency content to the fingerprint of a more modern recording of similar instrumental combinations per means of digital graphic & parametric equalisers.
