Dr Cooney directs the UCD Body Cognition Lab at UCD Psychology. Research at UCD Body Cognition lab is concerned with how various internal representations of our bodies can influence how our bodies feel to us from one moment to the next, our awareness of our internal physiological states, and our beliefs about the appearance of our bodies. It is known that women's body dissatisfaction is associated with a range of negative outcomes including lower quality of life, greater anxiety, and a greater risk of eating disorders. However, there is limited research on body image in women past young adulthood. Given this, a particular focus of the lab's current work is on body image across female adulthood.

Sarah will present data from the lab that has looked at the relationship between internal representations of the body, interoceptive awareness and body image disturbance in distinct epochs of female adulthood. The aim of the study was to examine body image disturbance (BID) and its pattern of expression across female adulthood and if BID also extends to a disturbance in how the body is imagined. Results show that different aspects of BID vary across different age groups and are associated with the speed of mental simulation of the body.

Prior to joining the UCD School of Psychology as an Ad Astra Fellow, Sarah worked at Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience in Prof Fiona Newell's Multisensory Cognition lab as a postdoctoral research fellow and completed her IRC-funded PhD under the supervision of Assoc. Prof Nuala Brady at UCD.
