Jaundice is very common in newborn babies, especially in the first few days after birth. Around 60% of full-term babies and even more preterm or low birth weight babies experience jaundice.

The main reason is that a newborn’s liver is still immature, and it cannot process the increased bilirubin formed due to RBC breakdown. This leads to physiological jaundice, which typically starts on Day 3, peaks by Day 5–7, and slowly resolves by Day 10.

In preterm babies or babies born with weak health, jaundice can be more severe or may last longer, and it needs proper monitoring.
