Mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves '88 DP went on from New England Conservatory to build an international performing career, appearing at the Metropolitan Opera and the other major opera houses of the world. She is best known for her portrayals of Carmen and Dalila. But she also offered consolation to the nation in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center when she sang "America the Beautiful" and "The Lord's Prayer" at the Washington National Cathedral during a memorial service for the victims on September 14, 2001, attended by President Bush, members of Congress, other politicians and representatives of foreign governments.

Graves returned to NEC on October 24, 2014 to conduct a masterclass with current voice students. Before the class she was presented with an honorary doctorate.
