Under the "Big Beautiful Bill" approved in 2025, the new SNAP requirements for military households mainly tighten eligibility by expanding work rules, changing income calculations, and narrowing exemptions.
Here’s what military service members and families need to know:

Basic Income and Asset Tests Still Apply: Military families must meet the same income and asset requirements as civilian households. Most types of military pay, including Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH), count as income for SNAP eligibility, which can make qualifying harder for some active-duty families.

Combat Pay, Hostile Fire, or Imminent Danger Pay Not Counted: These specific types of pay are excluded from income when applying for SNAP.

Expanded Work Requirements: The new law requires able-bodied adults ages 18–64—including those in military families—to work, volunteer, or participate in job training at least 20 hours per week unless they meet an exemption. There are no special blanket exemptions for active-duty military spouses or adult dependents under the new bill.

Loss of Certain Exemptions: Under the 2025 law, exemptions for groups such as veterans or people experiencing homelessness have been removed or narrowed, so more members of military households may be subject to work requirements unless they are elderly, disabled, or have young children.

Receiving the Basic Needs Allowance (BNA): If your household now receives the military’s BNA (a cash supplement for low-income military families), you cannot receive SNAP at the same time. BNA is counted as income for SNAP and results in automatic disqualification from SNAP as long as you receive the allowance.

Citizenship and Residency: Only U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents are eligible for SNAP under the new rules. Most active-duty military families qualify, but some non-citizen spouses or relatives may not.

Asset Limits: The asset limit remains, but is now enforced more strictly: $4,500 for most households in 2025. Some resources, like your primary home and many types of vehicles, are still exempt.

Application Reminders: Each state administers SNAP, so military families must apply in the state where they live or are stationed, and report all military pay and allowances.

In summary: the expanded work requirements, stricter income tests (especially counting BAH), and loss of exemptions make it harder for some military households to qualify. If you receive the new military Basic Needs Allowance, you cannot receive SNAP at the same time.
