After 56 years on Kalakaua Avenue, Waikiki's iconic International Market Place shut down forever at the close of business, Dec. 31.2013. The marketplace was built in 1957 by Paul Trousdale, Clint Murchinson Jr. and Donn E.R.G. Beach on land leased from what was then Queen's Hospital.
I first visited this nice enclave in the late 70's during a medical conference at the Sheraton. The IMP was directly across from the Outrigger Waikiki Beach, I subsequently went back and stayed at the Outrigger, the center of the Waikiki Beach strip. Had I known this was going to be demolished, I would have stayed at the Outrigger longer to spend more time there.
This outdoor shopping plaza was the brainchild of Donn Beach, of Don the Beachcomber restaurant fame. Beach's intention was to offer visitors the opportunity to purchase exotic Polynesian merchandise, all in a lively tropical setting.This is a walk down memory lane with pictures from different stays, I made this video to reminisce on the good time, the beautiful kois at the market place, all the trinkets I bought, all the yummy BBQ from the food court. My children have not seen this so hopefully this video will walk them through this nice green space that was known as the International market place.
