Leaking Connections
Toilets consist of a tank and a bowl. Since in most toilets these are two distinct parts that are bolted together, and water passes from one to the other, the connections can be subject to water leakage.

The toilet areas that should be check for water leaking are where the tank of the toilet is attached to the base of the toilet. The tank should be firmly attached to the base of the toilet, where as it does not move at all. Here, there are generally three openings that are subject to possible water leaking. The flush valve connection at the base of the toilet, and where the two tank-mounting bolts exit the tank and enter the mounting holes on the bowl of the toilet.

If leaking is discovered in this area generally just tightening the tank mounting bolts will fix the problem. However, in toilets where these gaskets appear to be corroded and rotted out the gaskets should be replaced.
