Carrying out a service on my Aunts 2009 1.0 3 cylinder Toyota Yaris.
This engine is the 1KR-FE which also seen use in the C1,107,108 and Aygo as well as the Daihatsu Sirion.

She previously owned the red Yaris that featured on videos several years back. That car also had a similar life devoid of any maintenance but met its demise at 186,000 miles when the head gasket failed. It was beyond economical repair at that and this Yaris replaced it.

This 1.0 3 cylinder is an easy engine to work on, nothing too hard to access or change all very logically laid out and something that anyone with a basic tool set could do at home to save money. If looked after these cars should be reliable, if not looked after like any other car it will suffer from mechanical failures eventually.

In this video the oil is drained, oil filter changed, new air filter fitted, the battery is checked, off camera i inspected the coolant and windscreen washer fluid. Testing the brake fluid it turned out to have a water content of greater than 3% meaning it needed to be flushed out. Brake fluid is something of an overlooked service item but important to keep an eye on as degraded brake fluid can affect braking performance and lead to failure of parts such as brake cylinders, callipers or ABS pumps.
