This is where the real skill comes in - the wax work. The better you are with the wax work, the less time you have to spend on finishing later. I took it slow and easy, but still loads of room for improvement.

Put a bit of baby oil on the mold as a release agent. Work it a bit, then dip in cold water to harden it up, and go again. Push, smush and smooth until it’s like you want it. Run a hot iron along the edges to get a nice seal on the top edges.

This is the stage where you’ve also got to hold it up to the light to be sure you haven’t thinned it out too much. If there are transparent sections, have to add more wax on to be sure it’s thick enough.

Then sprue it up and get it ready for investment.
