What Is a DC Motor?

A Direct Current (DC) motor is a device that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy using electromagnetic principles. This simple model demonstrates the basic working of a motor using Lorentz force.

Materials Used in This Model:

Strong Neodymium Magnet / Ceramic Magnet

Insulated Copper Wire (24–26 gauge)

2 Safety Pins (used as conducting holders)

AA Battery (1.5V or 9V)

Battery Holder / Tape

**Sandpaper (to remove insulation)

Wooden or cardboard base

How It Works:

The copper wire is shaped into a coil and balanced between the safety pins.

The safety pins are connected to the battery terminals, completing the circuit.

When current passes through the coil in the magnetic field, it creates a force that causes the coil to rotate — demonstrating the motor effect.

This is a great hands-on example of Faraday's law and Fleming’s left-hand rule in action.
