Though Tsai Ing-wen will remain in office until Lai Ching-te’s inauguration on Monday, Friday was her last workday at the Presidential Office. To mark the occasion, Tsai hosted a special farewell ceremony for her team. Let’s hear from her.

Tsai Ing-wen
President
Over the past eight years we have created a better Taiwan. If there is something I’d like to say to Taiwan it’s that I hope Taiwan can stay united. We must have confidence in ourselves. Anything that is good for our country can be accomplished by working together.

Lai Ching-te
President-elect
I feel that every member of staff has noticed that over this period, President Tsai Ing-wen has had a smile on her face, and a bright smile at that. I think it’s not surprising. After eight years of grueling work, she will now be relieved of this huge responsibility. All that effort means she will have a fantastic report card for her presidential graduation.

Lai pledged to continue Tsai’s work on promoting cross-strait peace and stability, and enhancing cooperation with other democratic countries. Other items on the agenda include increasing the number of social housing units and promoting social unity.
