Lionel Messi is the all-time record winner of the award, having won it six times overall. He also holds the record for most goals and most points in a single season (50 and 100 respectively, in 2011–12). Barcelona star Lionel Messi scooped his sixth European Golden Shoe award last season Messi held off competition from some of the continent's best goalscorers to pick up the prize for the third year in a row.

As things stand, Robert Lewandowski's haul of 34 goals has him on 68 points and he leads the way, even though Lazio's Ciro Immobile has the same scoring numbers. However, Immobile still has two more matches ahead of him and only needs one more goal against either Brescia or Napoli to move ahead of the Bayern Munich player. It seems that Cyrus is the main candidate to win the prestigious individual trophy that would crown him as the best scorer in Europe of the season.
Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo is lurking in third place and also has two rounds to go. The No.7 is currently three goals behind and on 62 points and has Cagliari and Roma to come. Therefore, nothing can be impossible for a Cristiano Ronaldo who aspires to his fifth Golden Shoe, for the six of a Lionel Messi who reaped the last three disputed.

Immobile and Ronaldo are also involved in another scoring battle - to score more goals in a top-flight Italian season than any other player. The record is 36 goals in a season held by Gonzalo Higuaín.

It will be interesting to see who eventually wins the award as Ronaldo and Immobile has now emerged as a favourite to secure the prestigious individual honour. Can Ronaldo catch up with Immobile? The race for the top scorer is set to go down to the last day with Ciro Immobile and Cristiano the two front-runners.
