"We wanted to show that the most important thing is peace and it's more that the scenes (in the Opening Ceremony) were perhaps not appropriate but the Olympic movement is about peace, brotherhood, this togetherness. And when it generates, on social media and from political leaders, aggressive reactions, tension and opposition, it's clear that it isn't what the Olympic Movement is about."

STORYLINE:
Religious leaders of all faiths joined International Olympic Committee Chief Thomas Bach and Paris 2024 President Tony Estanguet for an interfaith ceremony to celebrate their shared values of solidarity and peace on Sunday.

The event, held on the esplanade of Notre Dame cathedral, served as a tribute to the first interfaith meeting organised by modern Olympics founder, Pierre de Coubertin, 100 years ago in Paris.

International Olympic Committee President, Thomas Bach, urged people of all faiths to join the "call for peace."

"In this true Olympic spirit, I call on all of you, whatever your faith. Let us join the athletes in their call for peace. Please share this call for peace with all of your communities of faith. In this way our many voices will become one," he said.

The event comes in the wake of strong reactions from a number of religious leaders across the world, criticising some scenes at the Opening Ceremony last week.

Paris Olympics organizers have said there was “never an intention to show disrespect to any religious group” but rather to “celebrate community tolerance.”

French Bishop Emmanuel Gobilliard, special representative of the Holy See for the 2024 Paris Olympics, echoed this sentiment on Sunday.
