These are the messages so many of us have internalized—and they’re just not true. We've been fed a lot of lies about who belongs in outdoor spaces. Let's burn that message.

"You must have specific hiking clothing to be a hiker."
Nope. You don’t need expensive gear or a curated outdoor aesthetic to belong on the trail. Your body + whatever feels good to move in = enough.

"You must be thin to be considered an outdoorsy person."
Fat folks, disabled folks, queer folks, people of all sizes and shapes—we are outdoorsy. Period. Representation matters, and it starts by rejecting narrow definitions.

"A hike must be hard to call it a hike."
There is no minimum elevation gain required to enjoy nature. A walk around your neighborhood, a roll through the woods, a sit by a stream—all of it counts.

"You have to CONQUER the outdoors."
The outdoors isn’t something to dominate. It’s a place to connect with, respect, and enjoy. We don’t have to prove anything—we just get to be there.

"You have to lose weight in order to enjoy the outdoors."
You deserve joy, movement, and fresh air in the body you have right now. No prerequisites. No waiting until.

"They don’t make the gear in your size, so it’s your responsibility to get smaller."
The lack of inclusive gear is a design failure, not a personal one. Bodies don’t need to shrink to be worthy of gear that works.

These messages are more than just annoying—they’re oppressive. They’re designed to make us conform, to shrink ourselves (literally and figuratively), and to believe we don’t belong. But we do. We always have.

Let’s rewrite the story. You belong in the outdoors. Just as you are.
