Winning an Oscar is supposed to be the ultimate career boost, right? But for some actors, that golden statue didn’t guarantee lasting Hollywood success. From Roberto Benigni’s post-Life Is Beautiful flop to Mo’Nique’s Hollywood fallout, we’re counting down 10 Oscar winners whose careers didn’t soar after their big win. Did these actors deserve better, or did Hollywood get it right? Let us know in the comments!
1. Roberto Benigni
Life Is Beautiful (1998)
The toast of Oscar Night 1999, pulling a Warren Beatty with nominations for best actor, director and screenwriter, for a best picture nominee. Benigni claimed the actor prize, memorably climbing to the stage over the backs of chairs and celebrities. By 2002 he was living down a reviled version of Pinocchio and seldom seen on screen again.
2. Cher
Moonstruck (1987)
One of the greatest entertainers ever — except in Hollywood. Cher's 1988 best actress win set her up as the second coming of Barbra Streisand, but it never happened. Only seven movie roles since, two playing herself. Three, if you count her over-the-hill showgirl in 2010's Burlesque.
3- Mira Sorvino - Mighty Aphrodite (1995)
Mira Sorvino showcased a delightful cinematic charm as a good-natured prostitute in Woody Allen’s 1995 comedy. However, her follow-up work in The Replacement Killersand Mimic failed to impress film audiences and also did not allow Sorvino show off that same Mighty Aphroditecharm. Perhaps also contributing to her career decline was producer Harvey Weinstein. In 2017, Sorvino claimedthat she was one of Weinstein’s many sexual harassment victims and that the mega-producer derailed her career after she denied his sexual advances.
4. Tatum O'Neal
Paper Moon (1973)
Many actors get better as they age. Not O'Neal, who still ranks as the youngest Academy Award winner ever, at age 10 for her screen debut. O'Neal had two more hits with The Bad News Bears and Little Darlings before spiraling into addictions and tabloid troubles, never to headline a movie again.
5- Adrien Brody - The Pianist (2002)
Adrien Brody was just a year shy of turning 30 when he took home Oscar gold and became the youngest person to win the trophy for Best Actor. Brody famously went method for his stellar performance in Roman Polanski’s Holocaust drama.
Following The Pianist, Brody put together an impressive filmography of mixing genres and performance styles in films like The Village, The Darjeeling Limited, Predators, and a 2022 move to the small screen to play coach Pat Riley in Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty. However, the actor failed to reattain the lofty dramatic heights of The Pianist.
6. Marlee Matlin
Children of a Lesser God (1986)
Like O'Neal, it never got any better for Matlin than her debut. Matlin was literally born for the role of a deaf woman, with a genetic defect that robbed her of her hearing before age 2. There are not many roles for aurally challenged actors in Hollywood, and fewer worthy of academy notice.
7. Mo'Nique
Precious (2009)
Some Oscar winners never find another great role, and others, like Mo'Nique, don't seem to try. Her harrowing performance as an obese girl's abusive mother is one for the ages. But since then Mo'Nique's only movie of note is Blackbird, an indie that opened last year's Tampa International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.
8. Timothy Hutton
Ordinary People (1980)
A poster boy for unfulfilled promise. Hutton's Oscar-winning portrayal of a suicidal teenager was heralded as the second coming of James Dean. Casting directors didn't do their part to make it happen. After such lauded beginnings, being merely a dependable actor doesn't seem enough.
9. Jennifer Hudson
Dreamgirls (2006)
It could be said that Hudson won her Oscar by singing And I Am Telling You I'm Not Goingfrom Dreamgirls while competing on American Idol. When the movie version came together, Hudson was a no-brainer to hire. Then the world discovered she can only emote when a melody is involved.
10. Cuba Gooding Jr.
Jerry Maguire (1996)
Once he was shown the money, Gooding just kept grabbing for it, in roles unbecoming an Academy Award winner (i.e. Boat Trip, Chill Factor, Snow Dogs). Recently, Gooding showed up in Selma and Lee Daniels' The Butler, raising hope that he's rehabilitating his career. Good luck with that.
