He began his basketball journey late, but found himself spending 4 years with the North Carolina Heels, playing alongside future NBA Greats like Michael Jordan, James Worthy, Brad Daugherty and Kenny Smith. During Perkins’ time at Chapel he was routinely one the ACC and NCAA’s best players and would even win the 1982 National Championship. He would win a Gold Medal with Team USA in the 1984 Olympics before embarking on one of the most consistent NBA careers of all time. He began with the Dallas Mavericks as a great starter playing alongside guys like Mark Aguirre, Rolando Blackman and Derek Harper, where he play a big part in the franchise’s first Conference Finals Appearance. He would join Magic Johnson and James Worthy In Los Angeles and help the Lakers to a 1991 NBA Finals appearance before losing to the Chicago Bulls. A year and a half later, he would be traded to the Seattle Supersonics, where he would become one of the most lethal deep threats in the league, as he really helped open up the floor for Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp. During his time there, he would make another NBA Finals appearance when the Sonics lost to the Bulls in 1996. His last few years would be spent with Reggie Miller’s Indiana Pacers, but even into his mid 30s he retained a role on the team, and would make his last NBA Finals Appearance in 2000, when the Pacers lost to the Los Angeles Lakers. He would walk away from the game soon after that, as one of its best role players and winners, and he did it all while barely breaking a sweat, as only “Big Smooth” could do.
