On March 8, 1908, 15,000 women marched through New York City to demand shorter hours, better pay, an end to child labor, and the right to vote for women.

Almost exactly 3 years after that historic march, 146 garment workers – mostly immigrant women – lost their lives trying to escape a fire that broke out in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory.

That tragedy is cited as one of the catalysts for International Women’s Day because it intensified efforts already underway to have an annual day calling for women’s equality.

Now, we celebrate March 8 as International Women’s Day, honoring the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women, but also as a call to action to uplift women of every social class, race, country, and marginalized experience.
