In September 2022, the Dovre Line between Eidsvoll and Hamar (Jessnes) was closed for a month due to major construction on a new track alignment.
Passenger trains were replaced with buses, and freight traffic was diverted through the Kongsvinger and Solør Lines.
That’s when EMD diesel locomotives took center stage.
These reliable machines handled the detour, taking over freight duties while electric locomotives covered the Oslo–Kongsvinger stretch.
The electric units were often hauled along the Solør Line as part of the train, ready to power up again from Jessnes to Trondheim.
Meanwhile, Hamar Station had no overhead power during this period due to bridge construction, so everything ran on diesel up to Jessnes.
Notably, the Solør Line still uses an older train dispatching system, where each station relies on local TXP (train dispatcher) personnel and a green flag to signal that the line is clear.
