Publius Helvius Pertinax, born in 126 in Liguria, became Roman emperor for a brief period in early 193 CE.
The son of a freed slave, he began as a teacher before rising through the military ranks, serving in Syria, Britain, and along the Danube and Rhine.
He gained prominence during the Germanic invasion of 169 and held key commands in Moesia, Dacia, and Syria.
Though he fell out of favor under Emperor Commodus, he later became prefect of Rome.
After Commodus's assassination in 192, the Senate swiftly declared Pertinax emperor.
