The tanda of this week is by Pedro Láurenz and Alberto Podestá.

Alberto Podestá is one of the greatest singers in tango history, he recorded with the orchestras of Miguel Caló, Carlos Di Sarli, Pedro Laurenz, and Francini-Pontier, before going solo. One of his signature songs with Laurenz is ‘Alma de Bohemio’, in which he sings one of the longest notes ever sung in a tango. The recording with Laurenz was also revenge for an episode he had with Roberto Rufino when they both performed with Carlos Di Sarli in 1942.

Pedro Laurenz was not just an orchestra leader, but one of the best bandoneon players as well – and as Podestá said, a gentleman and very elegant. Laurenz and Podestá recorded 12 tangos together, plus 1 waltz and 3 milongas. The tanda of this week does not include the extravagant ‘Alma de Bohemio’, but it has the following tangos instead:

1. Recién (1943) Recién is one of my favourite tangos by Laurenz & Podestá, composed by Osvaldo Pugliese. By the way, there’s also a version of Recién recorded by Ricardo Tanturi & Enrique Campos, well worth listening to.
2. Como el Hornero (1944)
3. Que nunca me falte (1943) with lyrics by Héctor Marcó, who also wrote the lyrics for many tangos by Carlos Di Sarli.
4. Todo (1944) 'Todo’ was also recorded by Di Sarli & Roberto Rufino. I like both versions, but I think I have a slight preference for this one with Laurenz and Podestá.

Enjoy!
