Inspired by images from the Great Depression, John Galliano's designer Bill Gaytten set his Fall 2018 collection in the heart of the Midwest, early 30's Americana.
Gaytten imagined the arrival of a travelling circus and its seductive young dancers in a despondent town for Sunday's (04MAR2018) show in Paris.
"I sort of started at looking at some photographs of the depression really, the dust ball", the British-born designer recalled, "and from reading about it, I mean, the main form of entertainment was the travelling circus and the burlesque dancers and all the animals back in that time. And the story is really he meets this gorgeous young girl and wakes up in the morning and she's gone, the circus is gone. And she's stolen all of his clothes as well. Feisty, feisty chick."
The collection featured a mix of masculine and feminine garments favoured by Gaytten. Models sported tweed jackets and denim workwear over silky pale pink numbers, wtih a long pearl necklace hanging.
Sheer layers of embroidered tulle revealed sequin bras as the circus turned burlesque.
The Galliano Gazette, a newspaper-like print baring the title of the namesake designer, made its reappearance on silk spaghetti strap dress or skirt or on cotton canvas as a doctor's bag.
The 58-year-old Gaytten became creative director of the John Galliano label in 2011.
