Hiking in Obergoms, Switzerland, provides an immersive experience in the heart of the Swiss Alps, featuring prominent natural and man-made landmarks such as the Rhone Glacier, Grimsel Pass Dam, Rhone River, and Rhone Valley.
The Rhone Glacier, situated at the northeastern end of the canton of Valais, is one of the primary sources of the Rhone River. Spanning approximately 8 kilometers in length, this glacier is accessible via a well-maintained trail that allows hikers to get close to its blue ice and impressive crevasses. The glacier has been a key tourist attraction for centuries, with the famous ice grotto, an annually constructed tunnel, providing an opportunity for visitors to explore the interior of the glacier.
The Rhone River, originating from the Rhone Glacier, flows through the Obergoms Valley, creating a picturesque route as it winds through lush meadows, traditional Swiss villages, and dense forests. The valley offers an extensive network of well-marked hiking trails catering to various skill levels, from leisurely walks to more challenging treks.
