Описание к видео The Risk of the Invisible: From Cholera to Cell Phones - Dr. Robert Morris

Expert Panel Host: Robert Morris

• During a devastating nineteenth-century cholera outbreak, English physician John Snow proved that the deadly disease could hide in a drop of water. In the twentieth century, burgeoning cities would subdue cholera and typhoid by building massive filtration plants and bubbling poisonous gas through their drinking water. But in the new millennium, the demon of waterborne disease is threatening to reemerge, and the results could be catastrophic.

• In this fascinating, sobering account, Dr. Robert Morris depicts the epidemics that have shaken nations, celebrates the scientists who reached into the invisible and ultimately saved millions of lives, and sounds a timely warning we dare not ignore about the natural and man made hazards present in the water we drink.

• Robert D. Morris, MD, PhD, is a physician and an environmental epidemiologist with particular expertise in human health risks related to drinking water who serves as senior medical advisor to environmental health trust. He has taught at Tufts University School of Medicine, Harvard University School of Public Health, and the Medical College of Wisconsin and has served as an advisor to the EPA, CDC, NIH and the President’s Cancer Panel. His work has been featured in the New York Times and the London Times, and on Dateline NBC and the BBC. He lives in Seattle, WA. He has served as an advisor or consultant to many institutions nationally and internationally including the President’s Cancer Panel, the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences, the Centers for Disease Control, the International Joint Commission on the Great Lakes, and the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Environmental Epidemiology. He is the author of the best selling book “The Blue Death”. In The Blue Death Dr Robert D. Morris alerts America to a potential further problem that didn’t even appear in the talk of dams and roads after the collapse. His book is subtitled “Disease, Disaster and the Water We Drink”. At its heart is an account of a cryptosporidium outbreak in Milwaukee transmitted through its municipal water supply that killed more than 100, led to the hospitalisation of 4,000 and made 400,000 ill. What was so frightening about the case was that the water met all of the official standards for quality – and the treatment of it had followed all of the established protocols.
