There is a reason that Condé Nast Traveler ranked Mason City, Iowa as among “The World’s 20 Best Cities for Architecture Lovers.” Find out more in this virtual home tour that is part of the Iowa Architectural Foundation's Prairie School in Iowa class. The Page House in Mason City was designed by famed architect Walter Burley Griffin, and is located in the Rock Crest-Rock Glen development, the first planned Prairie School development in America. Gary and Anne Schmit take you through their amazing home which captures the essence of Prairie School architecture - as compelling today as it was when it was designed.

The Page house is constructed with a reinforced concrete structural system, and exterior walls of stuccoed clay tile on an ashlar stone base. It was built in 1912 (the first house constructed in the glen) from designs by Walter Burley Griffin. The house is two stories on the street elevation, three on the glen side. It has a gable roof, enlivened with a slight flare at the edges of the raking eaves, an orientalizing touch that Griffin used occasionally in his earlier houses.
