STORYLINE:
The hallways of a hospital in the Dominican Republic on Tuesday were overflowing with patients being brought from neighbouring Haiti with urgent need for medical attention.
146 evacuees, 46 of them children, have arrived at Dario Contreras Hospital in Santo Domingo since last week''s quake, which killed an estimated 200-thousand people and injured 250-thousand, according to estimates by European Commission analysts.
At least 75 Haitian patients have undergone surgery there since their arrival, and doctors say a large number of them have needed amputations due to the advanced trauma their limbs have suffered.
As patients come out of intensive care, hospital officials are finding the need to clear space for new evacuees.
Social and religious organisations have stepped up efforts to provide temporary shelter for children, many of them now orphans, who no longer need constant medical attention.
Father Manuel Ruiz says his church is providing shelter space for those who need it, and assured that when room runs out, more will be made available as long as there is a need for it.
Children ranging from newborns to teenagers, have been brought to the Dominican capital for treatment.
