Further From the Road-- David Jacobs-Strain & Bob Beach

Further From the Road takes place somewhere off of highway 242, a lonely stretch of asphalt that winds its way through the Three Sisters Wilderness, in central Oregon. Every year forest fires creep closer to the peaks, but there are still islands of pine and mountain hemlock, protected by vast lava fields. Corrissa Crowder and I drove that way on her last trip to Colorado. A few years later I gave a lift to the hitchhiker who inspired this song, on the way to a Halloween gig at the Belfry in the town of Sisters.

"Sometimes at night I hear that mountain call, early in November, when the snow begins to fall, I get lost in those woods, lost in my own head, lost among the living, and lost among the dead, as I go-- further from the road."
