Stargardt disease is one of the most common forms of inherited retinal disease and leads to permanent vision loss. A diagnostic feature of the disease is retinal flecks, which appear hyperautofluorescent in fundus autofluorescence imaging. It has been recognized that the flecks expand centrifugally with disease progression but quantifying these changes has been challenging as due to the time-consuming nature of the task.

Doctor Jason Charng completed his PhD at The University of Melbourne followed by a post-doctoral fellowship at the Centre for Hereditary Retinal, the University of Pennsylvania, USA. He currently works at both Lions Eye Institute and the University of Western Australia, where his main research interests are utilizing artificial intelligence to analyse ocular images as well as exploring structural and functional assessments for trial endpoints in inherited retinal degenerations.
