Difference between MSH 15 and MSH 16 ???

Specifies the level of acknowledgment the sending system expects from the receiving system after transmitting a message.


Specifies how the receiving system should respond to the processing of a message.



MSH 15 focuses on the acknowledgment expectations from the system-level perspective.

MSH 16 focuses on the acknowledgment expectations from the application-level perspective.

MSH 15 is more about the communication between HL7 systems or applications.



MSH 16 is more about how the receiving application within a system should acknowledge the message.



Example:
In a laboratory result transmission, MSH 15 might be set to 'AL' to ensure that the laboratory system always receives an acknowledgment from the ordering system, confirming successful receipt.



Example:
In the same laboratory result scenario, MSH 16 might be set to 'ER,' indicating that the laboratory application generates an acknowledgment only if there is an error during result processing.
