I go through phases were I'm obsessed with certain things about guitar playing. I can sometimes get obsessed with gear as well. Sometimes I obsess over amps, or guitars, and sometimes it's pedals. The Tim pedal has been my favorite overdrive pedal for close to 20 years. It is a dry, neutral, not fuzzy, transparent overdrive. I have found it to be the most transparent overdrive I've ever used. But - sometimes that may not be what you want. Sometimes you want some character from your pedals. The other pedals listed here - the Timmy, the warm drive, the zen drive, and the centavo, are all really nice. In the vast world of pedals, they don't impart a TON of character (like a boss metal zone) but they all have more of an identity than the Tim pedal.

Because I had all these pedals at my disposal, I want to test them all out, and have a reference to determine which pedal does one. Some pedals add overtones that might be good for heavier styles, but bad for country bends. Some pedals add thickness which are great for unison bends in a rockin' solo, but not good for emulating a slightly overdriven amp in a rhythm guitar part.

In this video I try to play the same licks identically using these 5 pedals. Take a listen and tell me what you notice. Which is your favorite?

I learned something for making this video actually. Humbuckers, because they distort more, tend to have a more consistent sound across different guitar pedals, and different distorted amps. Whereas single coils tend to let more dynamics through, push less, and therefore can sound more unique across different platforms.
