Tourism in Thailand, visit Wat Rong Khun - White Temple Chiang Rai.

Wat Rong Khun (Thai: วัดร่องขุ่น) commonly known as the White Temple is a unique Buddhist temple. It is located 13 km south of Chiang Rai in northern Thailand.

A must-see temple if you visit the north of the country on your trip to Thailand.

It was built by Chalermchai Kositpipat (Thai: เฉลิมชัย โฆษิตพิพัฒน์), a renowned Thai artist who wanted to create a lasting tribute to Rama IX, the former King of Thailand who died in 2016, and also to honor his hometown.

Despite its very original appearance, Wat Rong Khun is a real temple. It recalls the works of Gaudi in Barcelona. Its difference from other temples is obvious as soon as you see it. Its dazzling white appearance and the use of contemporary images from Western pop culture make it truly atypical.

History of Wat Rong Khun

It was Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat who created the White Temple on the remains of an old ruined temple. Construction of Wat Rong Khun began in 1997 and is still ongoing. The end of the work is estimated around 2070, probably several years after the death of the artist.

A white temple
Wat Ron Khun is a unique place. If its general architecture is close to traditional temples, its exterior and interior decoration distinguishes it from other temples. Its main characteristic is its whiteness symbol as it should be of purity. Chalermchai Kositpipat thought of his temple as a metaphor for good and evil, spiritual and material. The artist's vision is quite simple to understand :

The color white was obviously used to symbolize purity.
The mirrors embedded in the walls and the sculptures are omnipresent and have the purpose other than aesthetic, of reflecting light. This thus makes it possible to make the analogy between light and enlightenment or spiritual awakening.
The sculptures at the entrance, in particular the hands coming out of hell, offer a chaotic vision of the world and symbolize the damnation caused by materiality and its vicissitudes.
The long passage (bridge of Reincarnations) leading to the temple is also the symbol of the transition to a purer, more serene world thanks to the road traced by the Buddha. It leads to the main building - the Ubosoth - an emblematic place due to its style and its amphigouric message.
